Q:   Can concrete countertops be placed in the exterior?
A:  Exterior applications are possible, but require specific treatment.  As with any material, weather and the elements can cause deterioration and wear if not properly cared for and protected.  Proper sealer application and maintenance are critical in this application.

Q:  Do concrete countertops come in different colors?
A:  Concrete countertops can be molded in a myriad of colors using a number of different techniques.  Colors can be applied integrally in the material, broadcast on top, or acid stained or dyed.  Each technique provides a slightly different but beautiful end result.

Q:  Are there size limitations on counter tops?
A:  Each contractor may have their own size limits, but most often countertop sections that are precast (brought to site for installation) do not exceed 8’ long by 3’ wide.  This will require seams in longer applications.  The seams are not unsightly and can be incorporated into the design of the counter.  Cast in place (molded on site) countertops can eliminate the need for moving the slab and alleviate seams.

Q: What can I expect to pay for a concrete counter top?
A:  Prices will vary dramatically by geographic location, but do not expect concrete to be a low price countertop option.  Costs of a concrete countertop will be similar to granite however you have the option to customize every piece.  Numerous factors will affect the price including things such as countertop thickness, internal or external application, unique shapes, custom inlays or edges and back splashes.

Q:  Will I have issues with concrete countertops cracking or chipping?
A:   Even though concrete counters are quite durable, corners and edges can be susceptible to chipping.   Actions can be taken during construction to minimize this possibility by rounding the corners and edges.  Cracks may occur, but they most often are hairline and will not affect the structural integrity of the slab.

Q:  Is there a minimum or maximum thickness for concrete countertops?
A:  In general the minimum thickness of a concrete countertop is 1.5”.   There is no set maximum thickness and 2” countertops are seen all the time.  Usually for weight reasons, counters larger than 4” thick have the backs and centers at a narrower thickness and only have the fronts at the desired thickness.

Q:  Will my kitchen support the weight of a concrete countertop?
A:  The weight of a standard 1.5” thick concrete countertop is very similar to a similarly sized piece of granite.  (18.75 lbs per square ft vs. 18 lbs per square ft).  Most cabinets are built to support this weight and as for the home, building codes generally require loads at least 3 times the square ft load of a concrete countertop.

Q: How much of an overhang can I have with a concrete countertop?
A: There is no realistic limit here, but assuming at least twice the overhang is supported a cantilever of up to 12” can be achieved without support.  Overhangs beyond 12” should be provided some support.

Q:  Can I cut or place hot items on my concrete countertop?
A:   Our suggestion is to treat your concrete countertop as you would any other countertop material.  It is possible both could scratch or damage the finish of your countertop.  The customization capability of concrete can allow you to mold in cutting boards or inlay hot item trivets to eliminate this concern.

Q:  As concrete countertops stain resistant?
A:  Current technology and sealer/wax applications has lead to a concrete that is quite hard, but not more stain resistant than other stone countertop materials.  Every concrete counter should have a sealer applied to aid in water and stain resistance.  The type of sealer will depend upon your own situation and requirements.  It is still recommended to clean any stains, especially acidic spills, immediately to avoid marring the surface.

Q:  What is needed to keep concrete countertops clean?
A:  The best recommendation is simply a neutral PH cleaner (found at any hardware store or supermarket) and warm water.  You should try to avoid using abrasive pads, soaps and cleaners as they may damage the surface.
